About Danceries (Set I) Score

Danceries (Set I) Score is a musical masterpiece by Kenneth Hesketh, a renowned composer for Brass Band. This score is part of the Faber Edition: Faber Brass Band Series, ensuring a high-quality performance for any ensemble. The set of four movements, Lull me beyond thee, Catching of Quails, My Lady’s Rest, and Quodling’s delight, offers a diverse range of styles and moods, perfect for showcasing the versatility of your Brass Band.

Inspiration from Playford’s Dancing Master

The term ‘Danceries’ originates from Playford’s Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes from the seventeenth century. While the original publication was used to teach dance steps, this score brings a modern twist to the traditional melodies. The harmonies and rhythms are fresh and exciting, adding drama to the overall performance.

Movement 1: Lull me beyond thee

The first movement, Lull me beyond thee, is a gentle and lilting piece, almost like a barcarole. The original tune, ‘Poor Robin’s Maggot’, has been adapted to fit the modern style, making it a beautiful reverie for your audience.

Movement 2: Catching of Quails

The second movement, Catching of Quails, is a colorful and buoyant scherzo that showcases the band’s technical skills. The thematic material is cleverly distributed among the band members, creating a lively and engaging performance.

Movement 3: My Lady’s Rest

The third movement, My Lady’s Rest, is a tender pavane with Moorish influences. Solos for principal winds and brass add a touch of elegance, while the warmer tutti passages create a sense of cohesion.

Movement 4: Quodling’s delight

The final movement, Quodling’s delight, combines one of the melodies from Playford’s Dancing Master with an original contrasting melody. This dramatic and exuberant ending to the set is sure to leave your audience in awe.
