Description:

  • The Royer Labs R-122 MKII Matched Pair Ribbon Microphone Bundle includes two active, phantom-powered R-122 MKII ribbon microphones paired with two RSM-SS1 Sling-Shock shockmounts, specially engineered to isolate the microphones from vibration without the use of elastic bands. This bundle provides a complete, studio-ready stereo solution for demanding recording applications.
  • Royer Labs R-122 MKII Active Ribbon Microphones (Nickel, Matched Pair)
  • The Royer Labs R-122 MKII Active Ribbon Microphones combine phantom-powered active electronics with David Royers innovative ribbon design to deliver natural, transparent sound across a wide range of sources. Ideal applications include electric and acoustic guitars, electric and acoustic bass, drum overheads, brass, percussion, piano strings, woodwinds, Foley, and more.
  • Based on the classic R-121, the R-122 MKII offers a faster transient response and a larger audio transformer, resulting in more open high frequencies and a tighter, more focused low-end response.
  • Introduced as an update to the original R-122, the MKII version adds a switchable -15 dB pad and a bass-cut filter, both fully removed from the signal path when disengaged. The recessed switches prevent accidental activation during sessions.
  • The -15 dB pad, positioned before the active electronics, eliminates the risk of headroom-related distortion when recording extremely loud sources, without imparting any sonic coloration. The bass-cut filter, starting at 100 Hz with a 6 dB-per-octave slope, effectively reduces low-frequency buildup caused by proximity effect. This smooth filter is particularly useful for vocals, acoustic instruments, and close-miked electric guitars when reduced low-end response is desired.
  • The R-122 MKIIs active electronics are hand-wired in Burbank, California, and feature a specially designed toroidal transformer that delivers faster transient response than traditional ribbon microphones. This makes the microphone especially well suited for drum overheads, percussion, and acoustic instruments.
  • A fully balanced, hand-wired discrete head amplifier system combines the custom toroidal transformer with ultra-low-noise FETs to achieve a sensitivity of -36 dB while still accommodating high-SPL recording without introducing self-noise. The phantom-powered circuitry provides impedance conversion, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of microphone preamplifiers.
  • Royers proprietary offset ribbon transducer positions the ribbon element closer to the front (logo) side of the microphone, allowing greater ribbon movement within the primary magnetic field while maintaining a full and accurate frequency response during high-SPL recordings.
